By the way, Jez. When you cough a wee bit, do your dentures travel about four feet and make a noise on the hardwood floor? Or die you never have lying, thieving, pervert dentists and your dentures bashed in, or dropped by cops and broken? Oh, that's right. You prolly have carpet.

Gerard (ReconstrutIVATed: Jezza)

Gerard Marley Hopkins was an English poet, Roman Catholic convert, and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous 20th-Century fame established him among the leading Victorian poets. His experimental explorations in prosody (especially Sprung, and Slant Rhythms). His use of imagery established him as a daring innovator in a period of largely traditional verse.

I was taught Hopkins in 5th and 6 Form at school, and I loved the work. I had a fairly good grasp of Sprung, less of Slant, but I'm still learning. I read this poem at Poetry Night on June 24, 2022, and anyone who knows the About Pip page knws what happened to me coming home. One the night, a couple of hours before, I read from the top of the page, I'm known for a few things. Poetry and the Almanac among them. I love Gerard Manley Hopkins, among others, so this poem is called 'Gerard'.

So that sums it up, and here it is. No point in my hyperlinking the many references. They seemed pretty Almanac to me, when I based it on 'Spring and Fall' (interesting that the woard 'Fall' is used, because there's no doubt that I was taught that 'Fall' is what Americans call Autumn. That'd be another thing for me to clarify for the Australian American English page. You know how to google, you know how the search the Almy, you know how to ask, and that I'd be happy to discuss this stuff. So, here it is, with a few word changes.

Due to a combination of memory, sight, new hardware, new software, impediments, etc, it took about 8 hours to transcribe from notepaper, on June 26, 2011. I have 95 desktop icons on my new puter as well. I always have a lot because I do a lot. JeĒzza's replete with images about my life, as well as Hopkins, so I've named it after both Gerard and Jeremy, father of some of the five BEST of my grandchildren, who's a lovely bloke. It's dedicated to Jezza, too. My return to Bellingen has been the one of the greatest blessings of my life. Jezza had a fall from a Norolk Island pine about the same time. He didn't break anything, but got some nasty bruises. Good to have both of us back, Jezza. Shout you a coldie, next time I see you. Soon, I hope. Then I'll probably ditch this whole twee palaver, chuck a spaz, and 'rename it again'. Something like Percy. Gotta bolt, cobber. Catchya. Big hugs. <Ends/ Mwah! /> />  <Ends/Ends/

Jezza

Gerrard are you grieving over Gerard now unleaving?
Or have the poe-lice - the pigs, if you know my slang pages -
told so many whoppers, for nigh on a year of Sundays -
but those coppers never rang !
I dig my rhyme so I'll say 'meringue'.
I'll soon kick up a hullabaloo. That's what I'll do.
And I caught this morning morning's minion, kingdom of
daylight's dauphin, in her eating my nearly off starfruit
and pellets of chook. Wimpling wings of
'Chutney or Chase or Chase or Chutney',
that double-barrelled brute beauty
needs her plumes cut,so her mortal beauty which serves her well, will remain and suffice.
She's very nice.
And this land that bred me brought me to Bello,
and me three children and five grandies.
They know, ah, they know, they could get a better fellow.
But I'm mello in Bello.

August it was, that month of Leo and Octavian,
then September, that month of Pomona and the Eleusian Mysteries - I have a few.
Ah September, I'll remember, that at least
two carloads of men tried to murder me.

Then came Octoberand the Battle of Guagemala -
it's all a bit Guatemala, Osama and Obama -
string them all up
and hang them from the nearest bridge,
or tuck them into your fridge -
it'll only cost lives and billions, and he's got godzillions.
Your godzillions.

O Gerard are you leaving ?
Lorikeet or paraclete,
one wouldn't want to be stepping on your feet.

O, December, Gerry, and your Ember Poems, remember -

Ah, they said I was pissed.
And I was, but I was also pixed
that cold evening,
and seven hours in the Robert Frost.
I was pixed, working on my puter.
Having a quietie, alone.
Not thinking of thugs nor hooligans nor bikies.
I was thinking of Nike.
Not the shoes so much. The goddess.

The May. Ah, May.
The Mary Magnificat - magnificent.
And the raising of the Maypole,
we all used to spring into that.
Beltaine. Dare I repeat myself, Isia?
It's no crisis.
I've lost my Memoirs three times since I got back.
Maybe some other December I'll remember them.
I lost my specs, and the $2 replacement ones.
They were gawn.
I found them on the lwan.
Next time, Jezza ...
No next time.
Such is memory.

Further details

This has come to me as an afterthought. It's it's now 2:58 am, June 27, 2011. I'd already turned off the computer, ready for bed . I've been working on this page and About Pip since midday-ish. After ten years of daily almanacking, I've only learned some of this stuff in the past month or so.

If anyone wants to begin webmaster, I think I can teach anymature person in half a day for $50. It's mostly Open Source, so there are no software costs. Preferably in my large, loft/bedroom/office. For $50 I'd email two or thre pages of clear notes.
